'Top Gun: Maverick' passes 'Black Panther' as 5th-highest grossing movie ever in North America
The film returned to the top of box office charts over Labor Day weekend, adding $7.9 million between Friday and Monday and bringing ticket sales to $701 million. According to Paramount, 'Maverick' is the only film to ever be No. 1 at the domestic box office for both Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays, reports 'Variety'.
Paramount files motion to dismiss 'Top Gun: Maverick' copyright lawsuit
Shosh and Yuval Yonay, the widow and son of writer Ehud Yonay, filed the suit in June, arguing that the studio made the sequel without first renewing the rights to the article. In the motion to dismiss, Paramount, according to Variety, argued that it did not need to obtain the rights, because 'Top Gun: Maverick' is a work of fiction that has almost nothing in common with the non-fiction article and that the facts and ideas conveyed in the article cannot be copyrighted.

With this, the sequel to the 1986 film has become the sixth-highest grossing movie in US domestic box office history. According to Variety, it's an especially impressive benchmark because 2018's every-hero-but-the-kitchen-sink adventure 'Avengers: Infinity War' had a little help in building up anticipation. It served as part one (2019's 'Endgame' was part two) of Marvel's epic culmination of more than 20 movies -- most of which were box office juggernauts in their own right -- over 10 years.

According to 'Variety', it's only the second movie in pandemic times to cross $400 million stateside, 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' being the first. While the film may have clear skies in June, heavy turbulence is expected for the Tom Cruise-starrer in July as 'Maverick' will have to fight off heavyweights like 'Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8), 'Minions: The Rise of Gru' (July 1) to keep the domestic crown through 2022.

'Top Gun: Maverick' flies high; makes $548 mn globally over two weeks
Those returns, according to 'Variety', rank among the top 10 highest-grossing second weekends in North American box office history. The second-weekend earnings also pushed 'Top Gun: Maverick' to $291 million in North America, enough to overtake 2005's 'War of the Worlds' ($243 million) as Cruise's highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office.

'Mission: Impossible 7', which was earlier supposed to make its debut on September 30, will now premiere on July 14, 2023, reports 'Variety'. 'Mission: Impossible 8', which was slated for a July 7, 2023, release, will instead open on June 28, 2024.
