Nine Indian Universities Featured in QS World’s Top 50 Subject-Wise Rankings

According to the 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on Wednesday, India has secured 12 top-50 rankings in different subject fields and wide faculty areas, led by nine institutions.

Nine Indian universities and institutions have placed among the top 50 globally in subject-wise rankings by QS, albeit several of the top institutions in the country—including three IITs, two IIMs, and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)—have registered a drop in rankings.

According to the 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on Wednesday, India has secured 12 top-50 rankings in different subject fields and wide faculty areas, led by nine institutions.

Leading the charge is the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, which has taken the 20th position worldwide for Engineering-Mineral and Mining, the country's highest-ranked subject field.

IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur have been placed at the 28th and 45th positions, respectively, in the same category. However, both institutions have experienced a decline in their rankings.

At the same time, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay, which had been ranked 45th in Engineering and Technology, have improved by leaps and bounds, rising to the 26th and 28th positions, respectively. Both of these institutions have also moved up in the Engineering-Electrical and Electronics category and are now among the top 50 in the world.

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore have retained their position in the world's top 50 in Business and Management Studies. Yet, their ranking has declined, with IIM Ahmedabad going down from 22nd to 27th and IIM Bangalore from 32nd to 40th.

IIT Madras (Petroleum Engineering) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) (Development Studies) have also stayed in the top 50 worldwide but slipped a couple of spots.

Quoting QS, "A total of 79 Indian universities—10 more than last year—have collectively made 533 appearances in this year's rankings, reflecting a 25.7% increase from the previous edition. This includes 454 subject-specific rankings and 79 placements across five broad faculty areas."

In the newest edition of the QS rankings, India stands fifth when it comes to new entries, behind China, the US, the UK, and Korea. It also stands at position 12 for the overall number of entries across all fields.

"The increase in the number of Indian institutions included in the rankings reflects the sustained growth of the higher education system within the country, both in size and quality," QS said.
