The inauguration of the new campus of Nalanda University at Rajgir in Bihar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was attended by Heads of Missions from 17 countries, including all ASEAN nations, thus making a strong statement about India's commitment to its 'Act East' policy.
"Presence of foreign diplomats marks India's commitment towards strengthening its cultural and civilizational ties with our East Asian partners," said a government source familiar with the development.
Ambassador Pattarat Hongtong of Thailand reacted thus: "Honoured to join other 16 dip colleagues at the inauguration of Nalanda University's new campus. Re-establishment of NU has revitalised cilivilisation linkages and promoted P2P connect in the region. Will keep our active partnership with NU towards a sustainable Thailand-India relations."
PM Modi said, "Nalanda represents the heritage of the world, Asia, and many countries. Therefore, its revival cannot be restricted to any Indian aspects."
Singapore's High Commissioner Simon Wong reflected, "Front row seat to listen to Honourable PM Narendra Modi ji speak during the official inauguration of the Nalanda University. Most impressed. So privileged to visit the UNESCO Nalanda University ruins. Felt very blessed by the spirit of Buddhism."
Ambassador Ina Krisnamurthi of Indonesia expressed, "Honoured to represent Indonesia at the inauguration of new Nalanda University by PM Modi ji and EAM Jaishankar."
Nick McCaffrey, the Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, described his experience thus: "Very early start this morning to get to the re-opening of the ancient Nalanda Univ in Bihar by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar. Honoured to be here and enjoy Bihari food once again!"
Elaborating on this, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, "The rebuilding of Nalanda University sends out both national and international multiple messages. It has indeed brought out the seriousness with which we pursue our Act East policy—k is realization of a long-standing commitment by India to East Asia Summit grouping."
He further added, "Namely, we contribute to rejuvenation of the civilisational linkages, to celebration of our common cultural heritage and to appreciation of the huge diversity of our existence."
The inauguration of this new campus of Nalanda University transforms into a powerful symbolism, if not only of the revival of excellence in education, then certainly of India soundly reaffirming its role and responsibility as a bridge-builder and promoter of far-reaching global implications for cultural diplomacy.
