Reliance Industries succession plan: For the first time, Mukesh Ambani opens up on who will get the command

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani on Tuesday said that the younger generation is prepared for taking up leadership roles in the group. He made these remarks at the virtual  'Reliance Family Day' event that was organised to celebrate the 89th birth anniversary of RIL founder Dhirubhai Ambani. 

The RIL chief spoke about the plans related to succession for the first time. Referring to the younger generation, the billionaire said: “We should guide them, enable them, encourage them... and sit back and applaud as they perform better than us.”

“I have no doubt that Akash, Isha and Anant, as the next-gen leaders, will lead Reliance to even greater heights. I can see and feel their passion, commitment, and devotion to the cause of Reliance every day. I see in them the same spark and potential that my father had for making a difference to millions of lives and contributing to India’s growth,” he said.

Akash Ambani is the director and head of strategy at Reliance Jio and an executive committee member and he had joined the family business earlier in 2014. Isha Ambani joined around the same time and she is the director at Reliance Retail and Reliance JIO Infocomm Limited and Anant is the director of Reliance New Energy Solar and Reliance New Solar Energy.

The RIL Chairman spoke about plans on succession as the day of Sebi’s April 2022 deadline for splitting the chairman and managing director positions in listed companies arrives closer. Earlier in April this year, capital markets regulator Sebi had asked listed companies to ensure that the roles of chairman and managing director are split before April 2022. The Sebi chairman had said that the idea behind the separation was to improve corporate governance.

Ambani also spoke about the future plans of the firm and said: “We have completely re-engineered our energy business. Now, Reliance is poised to become a global leader in clean and green energy and materials. This transformation of our oldest business will provide us the largest growth engine for Reliance.” He also highlighted how RIL had started as a textile company but has expanded exponentially and their products are also a part of people’s everyday lives now.

The billionaire with utmost belief in the next generation leaders further said: “As we enter the second half of Reliance’s Golden Decade, I can tell you that the future of our company looks brighter to me than ever before. I can confidently make two predictions. First, India will become one of the top three economies in the world. Second, Reliance will become one of the strongest and most reputed Indian multinational companies in the world.”

He assured that the growth engine of the firm will continue to create significant societal value by providing unlimited opportunities for their partners and employees.a
