Record GST collection showcases resilience of Indian economy, Says FM Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday hailed the all-time high Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in April as a reflection of the resilience of the Indian economy and the success of cooperative federalism.

April's total GST collection was Rs 2.36 lakh crore, a 12.6% rise compared to April 2024's Rs 2.10 lakh crore. April 2025 net GST collection was Rs 2.09 lakh crore, a 9.1% increase compared to Rs 1.92 lakh crore collected in April 2024.

Sitharaman also expressed gratitude to taxpayers for their continuing trust in the GST system, valuing their contribution towards moving the nation ahead. "Deepest appreciation to the taxpayers whose money and faith in the GST architecture drive the nation's progress. Their work reflects a shared wish to build a Viksit Bharat," she tweeted on the microblogging site X.

The Finance Minister also wanted to extend her congratulations to the Finance Ministers of all states and state GST authorities since they are key stakeholders in the success of India's GST regime. She also appreciated the efforts of the field formations of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for their sincerity and hard work.

The steep increase in GST collections was because of tighter economic activity and improved compliance. GST collections from domestic transactions rose by 10.7% to Rs 1.9 lakh crore in April, while collections from imported goods rose by 20.8% to Rs 46,913 crore. Furthermore, refund issuance rose by 48.3%, at Rs 27,341 crore for the same period.

March 2025 also saw a rise in GST collections, which grew 9.9% to Rs 1.96 lakh crore from the same period last year, once again reflecting better economic performance and enhanced tax compliance. March GST collections over February 2025 were 6.8% higher than the Rs 1.84 lakh crore collected earlier this year.

In March, the GST collection included Rs 38,100 crore of Central GST, Rs 49,900 crore of State GST, Rs 95,900 crore of Integrated GST, and Rs 12,300 crore of compensation cess. The February collections were Rs 35,204 crore of Central GST, Rs 43,704 crore of State GST, Rs 90,870 crore of Integrated GST, and Rs 13,868 crore of compensation cess.

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh were top states in terms of GST collection in March.
