The first phase, encompassing 500,000 square feet of clean room space, is scheduled to be operational by early 2025. The company, headquartered in the United States, had disclosed its investment plans during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in June 2023.

Micron Technology, a global leader in memory and data storage, announced that the initial stage of its Sanand plant in Gujarat is set to commence operations in early 2025. The construction, undertaken in collaboration with Tata Projects, is underway, and Micron's President and CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, shared this development at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.

The first phase, encompassing 500,000 square feet of clean room space, is scheduled to be operational by early 2025. The company, headquartered in the United States, had disclosed its investment plans during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US in June 2023. Construction kicked off in September, with Micron committing to invest over USD 800 million out of the total project cost of USD 2.75 billion.

The "clean room" in the initial phase will host an Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) plant, maintaining a near-zero dust and vibration environment. Mehrotra outlined the company's commitment to scaling up capacity in response to global demand. The second phase of construction is slated to begin in the latter half of the current decade.

Emphasizing the partnership with the Indian government, Mehrotra highlighted a combined investment of USD 2.75 billion. Government support, channeled through a dedicated platform for fostering a semiconductor ecosystem, will contribute to funding the project and provide access to essential semiconductor infrastructure, fostering innovation and local talent development.

Gujarat was chosen as the location due to its robust manufacturing infrastructure, with Mehrotra expressing optimism that Micron's investment would stimulate further sectoral investments, bolster indigenous manufacturing capabilities, promote innovation, and contribute to job creation.

The company has already initiated the hiring process, with 200 individuals undergoing training in facilities in Malaysia and Mohali. Upon completion of both phases, the Sanand plant is expected to generate 5,000 jobs.
