In the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's successful trip to the United States, Tesla under Elon Musk has stepped up its hiring activities in India, months before its possible market entry.
Tesla's Indian hiring spree comes after Musk and PM Modi met during a visit to Washington, DC, recently, when they talked on a variety of issues, ranging from space to mobility to technology and innovation.
On LinkedIn, the EV company has advertised jobs for at least 13 positions, mostly in Mumbai and Delhi. These positions range from business operations analyst to service technician, as well as advisory roles such as customer engagement manager and order operations specialist.
The hiring push comes at a time when India has cut the basic customs duty on luxury vehicles worth over $40,000, reducing it from 110% to 70%.
Though Musk has in the past weighed the possibility of producing a lower-cost Tesla for the Indian market, there has been minimal movement on this aspect. Following his meeting with PM Modi, Musk thanked him, referring to it as an "honor" to meet him.
“It was a delight to meet Elon Musk’s family and to talk about a wide range of subjects,” PM Modi earlier posted on X. “We discussed various issues, including those he is passionate about such as space, mobility, technology, and innovation. I talked about India’s efforts towards reform and furthering ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance”.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Modi at the Blair House in Washington, DC.
“PM Modi and Musk discussed strengthening collaboration between Indian and US entities in innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development. Their discussion also touched on opportunities to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and good governance,” according to a statement from the MEA.
The Prime Minister gave books to the three children of Elon Musk during their meeting. The books comprised The Crescent Moon by Rabindranath Tagore, The Great RK Narayan Collection, and Panchatantra by Pandit Vishnu Sharma. Images later posted by the Prime Minister indicated the children reading these books.
As a return gift, Musk gave PM Modi a unique gift, which is said to be a heat shield tile that was used in SpaceX's Starship flight test 5, conducted last year in October. The tile had the inscription: "Starship flight test 5, October 12, 2024."
