Demolition drive triggers midnight tension in Andhra Pradesh's town

The revenue and municipal department officials reached the Srinivasa Nagar area late on Thursday night with bulldozers to demolish illegal structures. The officials said houses were built illegally in the lake bed. Some people fell at the feet of Palasa Thasildar M. Madhusudhan Rao pleading with him not to demolish the houses.
Delhi HC restrains ED from taking steps on attaching Rana Ayyub's properties

Ayyub was approaching the Delhi High Court challenging the attachment of funds by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). In her plea, Ayyub claimed that the provisional attachment has expired after the completion of 180 days. However, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) is continuing with proceedings of the probe agency, the plea stated. The scribe is facing the PMLA case for allegedly misusing funds collected for charity through the website ketto.com, and the ED in February attached her assets worth Rs 1.77 crore claiming that the money was traced to the proceeds of crime.
Anti-CAA protests return to northeast

In Assam, a protest meeting was held by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) against the CAA. NESO Advisor and AASU leader Samujjal Bhattacharya said that NESO staged peaceful protests at all the state capitals. The protest is also pertaining to issues related to floods, influx of migrants, complete scrapping of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, providing constitutional safeguards to the indigenous communities, the imposition of Inner Line Permit (ILP) to protect the indigenous people in all northeastern states and implementation of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, 1985.
Gyanvapi case: Husband of plaintiff gets death threat from Pakistan

The Shringar Gauri-Gyanvapi case hearing resumes in the court of the district judge from Thursday. Station Officer (SO) Luxa, Anil Sahu, said, "We have lodged an FIR against unidentified person/s for issuing threats after receiving a complaint from Sohan Lal Arya." Arya told reporters that he was being threatened by someone calling from a mobile number of Pakistan.
ED files second supplementary prosecution complaint against Jacqueline Fernandez

Jacqueline has been named an accused in the charge sheet. Jacqueline, and another Bollywood actress Nora Fatehi, both had recorded their statements as witnesses in the case. Earlier, the probe agency had attached Fernandez's fixed deposits worth Rs 7.2 crore, terming it proceeds of crime. In February, the ED filed its first supplementary prosecution complaint against Pinky Irani, an alleged aide to Chandrashekhar who introduced him to Bollywood actresses.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and comprising justices J.K. Maheshwari and Hima Kohli said: "Upon being mentioned by Aparna Bhat, Advocate on Record for the petitioner seeking urgent listing of the matter, the registry is directed to list the matter on August 22 before a bench presided over by Justice Uday Umesh Lalit." Earlier this month, the Gujarat High Court had issued a notice to the SIT seeking a reply to the bail applications filed by Setalvad and former Gujarat DGP R.B. Sreekumar. The high court is scheduled to hear the matter in September.
'Prima facie not so improper', SC on plea against practice of Talaq-e-Hasan

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said prima facie the court is of the opinion that Talaq-e-Hasan is not very improper. "Prima facie this (Talaq-e-Hasan) is not so improper. Women also have an option... Khula is there," observed Justice Kaul. The bench, also comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh, said prima facie it does not agree with the petitioner. Talaq-e-Hasan is the practice by which a Muslim man can divorce his wife by saying the word talaq once a month, for three months. "Don't want this to become an agenda for any other reason," said the bench.
Ayodhya's Ram temple trust expects project to be ready to receive pilgrims by Dec 2023

Temple construction work has been completed up to 40 per cent, Rai said. Now the work for the plinth of the temple is going on. The construction work for the new temple will be completed by December 2023 when the public will be able to visit Ram Lalla. The temple and the whole complex are being constructed on a land spreading across 67 acres.
