The United States has indicated its anticipation that the caretaker government of Bangladesh, under Muhammad Yunus's leadership, will adhere to human rights and provide fair treatment of its citizens, especially in light of increasing worries regarding the spread of Islamic extremism.

"Our basic standard in dealing with other nations is how they treat people and the kind of standards we want to expect from countries that are friendly. Diplomacy is based on such values," Bruce said.

She again emphasized that America hopes Bangladesh and other countries would be in tune with human rights norms, conduct themselves justly, and govern as their peoples' expectations require. "That should be any government's guiding principle," she continued.

Earlier, Bruce had reaffirmed the US's strong opposition to any kind of intolerance or violence against minority groups in Bangladesh. Her remarks came after US intelligence head Tulsi Gabbard expressed concerns over the growing influence of Islamist extremism and attempts to create an Islamic caliphate in the nation.

Bangladesh's Army Chief Waker-uz-Zaman has been quoted as warning of imminent threats of growing extremism in the country.

A fortnight ago, during her attendance at the Raisina Dialogue in India, Gabbard discussed at great length the Bangladesh political unrest and instability. She pointed out how the US administration has serious concerns over the harassment of religious minorities such as Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians.

Gabbard severely rebuked deteriorating conditions within Bangladesh, affirming the firm commitment of the Trump administration against extremist forces. She reiterated the fact that the administration is bent on eliminating those ideologies that call for "Islamist terrorism" across the world.

Describing the means through which radical outfits have set their sights to form an Islamic Caliphate in different regions, including Bangladesh, Gabbard assured that the Trump government had already started diplomatic talks with Yunus's interim administration regarding these matters.
