The US military recently conducted targeted strikes on three sites utilized by Iran-backed forces in Iraq following an attack that resulted in injuries to American personnel, including one critically wounded. Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin affirmed these actions as necessary and proportionate responses to a series of assaults against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by militias supported by Iran, including the recent attack on the Arbil Air Base carried out by Iran-affiliated Kataeb Hezbollah and related groups.
In a statement quoted by The Times of Israel, Austin emphasized that these precision strikes aimed at Kataeb Hezbollah facilities signify the US's commitment to safeguarding its personnel, interests, and troops. He reiterated the readiness of the United States to take further essential measures to defend its people and facilities, underlining the paramount importance of protecting US interests in the region.
Austin clarified that while the US is not seeking escalation of conflict, ensuring the defense of its personnel and interests remains the highest priority. The strikes conducted were a direct response to the attacks on US personnel by Iranian-backed militias and serve as a clear indication of the US's preparedness to take necessary actions to ensure the safety and security of its forces and facilities in the region.
