After a fairly decisive victory in the UK general elections, the newly elected British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, adopting humility, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his global leadership during a telephone conversation between the two leaders. The telephone call trailed his landslide victory to clearly make out that bilateral relations shall be taken to the whole new level by strengthening them further and managing key issues like climate change and economic growth.
A statement from the British PM's office read that the leaders also discussed the "living bridge" between the UK and India, besides other commitments on the 2030 roadmap. The two sides also drew attention to opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as defense, security, technology, and climate change.
“The Prime Minister said he looked forward to further deepening the strong and respectful relationship between both countries, and welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s leadership on key global challenges, such as climate change and economic growth."
On trade relations, Starmer expressed that he stands ready to finalize a mutually beneficial FTA. Prime Minister Modi invited Starmer to visit India at an early date, and both sides reiterated their commitment to progress in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the economic relationship.
PM Modi congratulated Starmer on electoral success and committed to shared global progress and prosperity. "Pleasure to talk to Keir Starmer. Congratulated him on assumption of charge as UK PM," Modi tweeted after speaking with him.
The two leaders reaffirmed the historical ties between India and the UK and committed themselves to continuing deepening of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both sides also took note of the strong contribution of the Indian diaspora to all walks of UK life-in the social, economic, and political sphere specifically-and 'reiterated their commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties'.
The PMO statement came with similar words both countries would extend continued collaboration and communicating with each other.
