Trump Vows to Bring Peace to Ukraine in Talks with Zelenskyy

"President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today. He congratulated me on a very successful Republican National Convention and becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, a social media post.

Donald Trump has vowed to end Ukraine's conflict with Russia – hours after the call he made following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call to congratulate him on his victory in the Republican presidential nomination. The two leaders spoke by phone on Friday. Trump posted an update on their conversation on Truth Social, a social media platform.

"President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today. He congratulated me on a very successful Republican National Convention and becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, a social media post.

That's important in the sense that it was his first discussion with any foreign leader since his nomination as the Republican Party's nominee, part of growing international acknowledgment of Trump's electoral prospects for the November 5 elections.

“I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families. Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity,” Trump wrote.

In their call, Trump recounted that Zelenskyy condemned the assassination attempt made on him and said something about how the American people were united in a tough time.

Zelenskyy posted about calling Trump to congratulate the Republican nominee on his nomination, with respect to the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

“I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future. I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation's freedom and independence,” he said.

“Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day. We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting,” Zelenskyy wrote.

Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is eternally grateful to America for the participation in enhancing their capacity to deter Russian aggression. He outlined the ongoing attacks of Russia against Ukrainian cities and villages but showed an accord with Trump to discuss steps toward a fair and long-lasting peace at a personal meeting.

The meaning of all this for the 78-year-old former president of the US is completely different as he runs anew for the presidency, at least concerning US policy on Ukraine and Russia. Such a victory by Trump might quickly flip the transatlantic solidarity with Kyiv that President Joe Biden has been able to build up.

Only days ago, Trump announced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate for the November election. Vance, known for his past remarks about Ukraine, has been noted to say, "he doesn't care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other."
