US President Donald Trump avoided taking sides in the recent India-Pakistan standoff after the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack, saying that the two nations would "get it figured out one way or the other."
During a news gaggle en route to Rome to attend Pope Francis' funeral, Trump was queried by a journalist whether he was worried about the situation and whether he intended to talk with India and Pakistan's leaders. Trump, who had previously indicated that he would broker between the two countries in his first term, declined to repeat the offer. He added: "There have been tensions on that border for 1500 years," jokingly exaggerating the border's history of tension. "But they'll sort it out one way or another. I'm sure I know both leaders."
India has never welcomed foreign interference in its border conflict with either Pakistan or China. Although Pakistan had previously sought interference, it is not certain whether it did so again this time. Trump's initial invitation during his first term came after earlier Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan publicly invited mediation at a joint news conference with Trump in the Oval Office but was rejected by New Delhi then.
During his second term, Trump also offered to mediate the India-China border impasse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's White House visit in February but again India refused.
Although President Trump did not propound other measures to mediate the situation, his administration and he themselves were quick to denounce the Pahalgam attack and express solidarity with India in its war on terror. Trump spoke with Prime Minister Modi mere hours after the attack to convey his condolences and assistance. A White House condemnation of the attack was also released near earlier.
On Friday, US National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard offered condolences and condolences to India's efforts at "hunting down" the perpetrators. "We stand with you and stand behind you as you hunt down perpetrators of this heinous attack," she tweeted on X.
