US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as his secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, controlling agencies associated with immigration issues.
Announcing her nomination on the social media site 'Truth Social' last night, Trump tweeted, "Kristi has been very strong on Border Security."
If approved by the Senate, Noem's appointment would round out the package of three critical positions dealing with Trump's high-priority immigration agenda, which includes mass deportations.
She reportedly was on Trump's list of Vice President candidates.
Describing it as: "With Donald Trump, we will secure the border and restore safety to American communities."
She shares Trump's hardline stance on immigration and led troops from South Dakota's National Guard to Texas to reinforce Republican Governor Greg Abbott's border control action defying President Joe Biden's administration.
Noem also vowed to send roll of razor wires for Abbott to reinforce the border barriers that the Supreme Court ordered him to remove.
Her broad portfolio comprises much of domestic security.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement-it manages the removals; Customs and Border Protection-responsible for putting out agents along the borders, and Citizenship and Immigration Service-processes application for immigration and citizenship.
In addition, she will run the Secret Service, which handles VIP security and has faced criticism for not doing enough to stop the shooter in the failed assassination attempt against Trump.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Transportation Security Administration, the Coast Guard, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency are also part of the department.
She previously represented the state's sole seat in the House of Representatives before winning election as Governor.
She claims to be a rancher and farmer and tries to depict her as a practical frontierswoman.
In her militant autobiography, "No Going Back," she spoke of how she shot her dog on the hunting trip because it was quite vicious and could not be placated and made use of this incident as a testament of her incorruptibility in doing the right, yet "tough, messy, and ugly" things.
