Trump Appoints Elise Stefanik as U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN

President-elect Donald Trump Monday named a fierce critic of the world organisation, Elise Stefanik, to be the US permanent representative, a cabinet-level position.

Appointing Stefanik, whom he described as "an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter", sets the stage for a resurrection of the confrontation with the UN, which marked his first term.

She is the second of his two nominees to his cabinet, after Susie Wiles, whom he named his chief of staff.

He also announced on Sunday night that he would be appointing Tom Holman as his "Border Czar" to oversee the mass deportation of illegal migrants and tighteners on border security.

Stefanik's appointment would need Senate approval, however the chief of staff would not require it, but neither is it even confirmed that Holman would be required to have his appointment confirmed in the Senate because "Border Czar" is not currently a role. A Representative for New York State constituency, Stefanik is the chair of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives.

She is one of the most ardent defenders of Trump in Congress and voted in 2021 to overturn the election of Joe Biden as president, in support of Trump's claim that it was he who had won the election.

Stefanik was among the noisest critics of the Democratic move as she reported on Trump's impeachment hearings.

She argues against the UN and other international organizations, akin to Trump.

Trump withdrew the US from the UNESCO and the Paris Climate Accord signed under the auspices of the UN.

The US is also the biggest contributor to the UN, accounting for 22 percent of the budget, and Stefanik has mentioned that Washington should revisit funding to the organisation.

Stefanik has also criticised the UN for anti-Semitism where the organization has been very vocal about criticising Israel, particularly during the Gaza War.

She supported cutting the funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency, which offers a range of humanitarian services to Palestinians, on grounds that it harbours operatives of Hamas.
The UN is already forced into inaction over the wars in Gaza and Ukraine thanks to the standoff between the Western countries in the UN Security Council and Russia, back by China.

Stefanik will contribute to the polarisation, though on Ukraine it is not clear what Trump's policy would be.

He has said that he would end the war and he has been lukewarm on financing Ukraine, while many in the Republican right have called for cutting back.

On Saturday, Trump said that he would not be inviting Nikki Haley, a permanent representative to the UN during his first term, to join his administration.
Haley came to the UN with a stern America First agenda and attacked the critics of the US, threatening retaliation.
