A tragic shooting incident unfolded on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), claiming the lives of at least three individuals, including the gunman, according to local police.
The incident took place near BEAM Hall on the UNLV campus during Wednesday morning. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated in a press briefing, "There is no furthershoo threat on campus. No more threat to the community. The suspect is deceased. Right now, we know there are 3 victims, but unknown extent of the injuries. That number could change."
The injured were promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention. In response to the situation, McMahill announced the closure of the UNLV campus and its affiliated branches for the day "out of an abundance of caution."
The LVMPD urged the public to stay away from the area, emphasizing an ongoing active investigation. The university issued an emergency notice instructing individuals to evacuate to a safe area and follow the protocol of "RUN-HIDE-FIGHT."
As of the latest reports, the conditions of the injured remain undisclosed, and an investigation into the motives of the shooter is underway.
A hotline has been established to provide support for those affected by the campus shooting. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman expressed condolences, stating, "Tragic and heartbreaking news coming out of @unlv. Praying for everyone on campus as law enforcement responds to the situation."
The White House in Washington, D.C., confirmed that it is monitoring the reported shooting at UNLV. The university, with around 25,400 undergraduates and 4,300 graduates, is now grappling with this unfortunate and distressing incident.
