Pakistan will formally start its month-long term at the head of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, a report said. This presidency is part of Pakistan's current two-year stint as a non-permanent member of UN's most influential decision-making organ which began in January 2025.
The South Asian nation secured its current seat on the Council with overwhelming backing, winning 182 out of 193 votes in the UN General Assembly. The presidency of the Security Council rotates monthly among its 15 members in alphabetical order.
Pakistan's Presidency will be transparent, inclusive and responsive," Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad informed the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) in New York, as he was to preside over the Council during a tumultuous international environment.
Ambassador Iftikhar is to preside over deliberations during July, guiding consideration on a range of urgent global matters. He recognized the multifaceted challenges facing the world, including deepening geopolitical tensions, increasing conflicts, and mounting humanitarian crises.
During its presidency, Pakistan will host two high-level signature meetings: one on multilateralism and peaceful conflict resolution, and the other on cooperation between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
"These issues are common global priorities — multilateralism, preventive diplomacy, and cooperation with regional organisations for the promotion of international peace and security," said Ambassador Iftikhar.
In addition to these events, the Council led by Pakistan will also discuss current developments in major regions such as West Asia, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
Ahead of the presidency, Ambassador Iftikhar has already held a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to map the Council's program for July. "As a nation which has always championed dialogue and diplomacy, Pakistan introduces a principled and pragmatic approach to the work of the Security Council informed by its own experience and long-standing contribution to UN peacekeeping and peace-building efforts," the envoy declared.
We eagerly anticipate cooperating with all Council members for the Council's joint, timely action in accordance with its central responsibility under the Charter and expectations of wider UN membership," he added.
Pakistan has already held membership on the Security Council seven times, including 2012–13, 2003–04, 1993–94, 1983–84, 1976–77, 1968–69, and 1952–53.
