Media reports have suggested that the Government of India has granted former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina a temporary stay since the dissolution of her administration in Bangladesh on Monday.
India is reportedly going to extend full logistical support to Hasina during this interim period while she seeks asylum in the United Kingdom, Daily Sun reports.
Her stay here in India is only temporary as she is expected to be sent to Britain anytime soon.
Hasina resigned on Monday in the midst of the most violent anti-government protests ever witnessed by the country and is now on her way to London via India.
So far, there has been no confirmation on the part of the UK authorities about her asylum plea, the Daily Sun reported.
Hasina is joined by her sister, the UK citizen Rehana, as she seeks asylum in the UK. Rehana is the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina and the daughter of late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the "Father of Bangladesh," and she is also the mother of Tulip Siddiq, who represents the Labour Party as a member of the British Parliament.
Meanwhile, officials of the Indian government are keeping a close watch on the fast-changing developments in Dhaka.
Bangladesh Army Chief, General Waqar-uz-Zaman, said this evening that Hasina had resigned and an interim government was now taking charge.
"I am assuming full responsibility for the country. I urge your cooperation," he said in a televised address.
The Army Chief said that he had met with political leaders and told them that the Army would now oversee law and order.
More than 100 people have been killed in protests against Hasina's government over the past two days.
