The prime minister, on invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, will be attending the 16th BRICS Summit to be held in Kazan in the Russian Federation on Tuesday. The summit, under the theme 'Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,' has seen global leaders converge yet again to discuss and thrash out important issues of the world.
"India values the close cooperation within BRICS which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on issues concerning the global developmental agenda, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, building resilient supply chains, promoting cultural and people to people connect, among others, including trade relations, security and counterterrorism," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his departure statement on Tuesday morning. The newly expanded BRICS with the addition of new members last year has added to the strength of the Group and its agenda for the global good, PM Modi said.
"Building on the Annual Summit held in July 2024 in Moscow, my visit to Kazan will further reinforce the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. I look forward to meeting other BRICS leaders, he added.".
In addition, he will probably have bilateral meetings with his peers from the BRICS countries and other invited leaders. Participation in the summit is surely to be the most important opportunity to reflect on the progress made by initiatives launched under the auspices of BRICS and on possible grounds for further cooperation.
Within the narrow and expanded format of the meetings, the leaders of the BRICS are likely to exchange opinions regarding current issues of the global and regional agenda as well as discuss the three key areas of cooperation based on the policy of Russian chairmanship: politics and security, economics and finance, and cultural and humanitarian contacts.
Special attention will be paid to the issues of possible expansion of BRICS with the planned establishment of a new category of partner states for unification.
Reports from the chairman of the New Development Bank, the Business Council, the Interbank Cooperation Mechanism, and the Women's Business Alliance will also be heard during the summit.
The outcomes of the discussion will be reflected in the Declaration of the Kazan Summit.
On Wednesday, a meeting will take place in the 'outreach/BRICS plus' format with representatives of virtually 40 countries taking part, from CIS leaders, delegations from lots of countries in Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America up to heads of executive bodies of some international organizations.
According to the Kremlin, accent in discussion during the summit will be on the more and more aggravated situation in the Middle East and on interaction between the BRICS countries and the Global South in the interests of sustainable development.
Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to hold bilateral meetings with almost all leaders who will come to the summit.
