The missile, equipped with a 'multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV)', was launched from APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha, meeting all predetermined parameters, as confirmed by the Indian Defence Ministry. With a range of up to 5,000 km, the Agni-5 missile significantly expands India's striking capability, covering vast swathes of Asia, including northern China, and extending into parts of Europe.

While India had previously conducted various tests of the Agni-5 missile, this marked the first instance of a flight test incorporating MIRV technology, enhancing its operational effectiveness.
