Joe Biden and Kamala Harris named Time 'Person of the Year'

Biden, 78, who served two terms as Vice President to Barack Obama, will become the oldest person to assume the Office of US president when he is sworn in on 20 January. Harris will become the first woman, the first Black woman and the first person of Asian descent to be Vice President of United States.

US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were named Time Magazine’s 2020 “Person of the Year” on Thursday for their election victory over Donald Trump.

Biden, 78, who served two terms as Vice President to Barack Obama, will become the oldest person to assume the Office of US president when he is sworn in on 20 January. Harris will become the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first person of Asian descent to be Vice President of United States.

Time's magazine cover boasts portraits of Biden, 78, and Harris, 56, with the subtitle "Changing America's story."

“Together, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris offered restoration and renewal in a single ticket. And America bought what they were selling: after the highest turnout in a century they racked up 81 million votes and counting, the most in presidential history, topping Trump by some 7 million votes and flipping five battleground states,” the magazine said while explaining the reason behind their selection.

The Pair was chosen ahead of three other finalist: frontline health care workers and Anthony Fauci, the racial justice movement, and President Trump.

Earlier Thursday, Time named basketball superstar LeBron James Athlete of the Year for his achievements on and off the court.

The 35-year-old Los Angeles Lakers player was honored for battling voter suppression among Black citizens in a year when he won his fourth NBA title.

K-Pop sensation BTS was named Entertainer of the Year.

Teenage climate change activist Greta Thunberg was Time's Person of the Year last year, while Trump won in 2016.
