Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir have reportedly expressed opposition to the cabinet's decision regarding hostage swapping with Hamas.
Government sources conveyed to IANS that both ministers have raised objections to the proposed hostage deal. Notably, Minister without Portfolio and former Chief of Armed Forces, Benny Gantz, questioned Smotrich's opposition, prompting him to reflect on whether he trusts Hamas leadership more than Israel's war cabinet.
During a cabinet meeting that extended into early Wednesday morning, members of the Likud party, including Ben Gvir, reportedly clashed over their differing stances. Hebrew media sources indicated a heated exchange between Ben Gvir and Likud party ministers during the discussions.
Ben Gvir has reportedly warned that the decision could lead to long-term damage, potentially impacting the country for decades.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum staged significant protests, while international pressure mounted on the Israeli government. As a result, a ceasefire for four days was agreed upon, entailing the release of 50 hostages, including women and children. Additionally, sources suggest that starting Thursday, a total of 300 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails will be released as part of the arrangement.
