Hamas said Tuesday that recent comments by US President Joe Biden on its stand on the Gaza ceasefire agreement were "misleading.".
On its part, Hamas announced it felt "great astonishment and disapproval" over the remarks of Biden in a statement on Tuesday, insisting that they do not reflect the reality of its position. It said it remained focused on realizing a halt to all kinds of hostilities, adding that the statements by Biden mirrored American bias in favor of Israel. Hamas said this further emboldens Israel with a "renewed green light" to further escalate its acts of aggression against civilian populations as part of its attempts to eliminate and displace the Palestinian population.
The statement further went on to clarify that mediators from Qatar and Egypt are well aware of the fact that Hamas has adopted a constructive and positive approach in all the previous rounds of negotiations. It also cited continuous obstruction by Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu, who successfully prevents agreements with new conditions and demands.
Hamas persisted in confirming that it will not stand farther away from the terms presented by the various mediators on July 2, similar to Biden's remarks, as well as identical to the UN Security Council Resolution. It insisted that the mediators go ahead with their efforts by persisting on making Israel accept it.
Israeli media reported Monday that Biden said Hamas was now "backing away" from a proposed deal between the Islamist group and Israel for a hostage deal that could end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Speaking to the Democratic National Convention, Biden said, "It's still in play, but you can't predict." He went further to add, "Israel says they can work it out… Hamas is now backing away.".
