The incident has roots in the unfortunate demise of Sarabjit Singh, who passed away due to a cardiac arrest at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore on May 2, 2013. Singh had remained in a coma for nearly a week following a brutal assault within the confines of Kot Lakhpat jail, where Tamba, among others, was involved.

Born in Lahore in 1979 to Sarfaraz Javed, Tamba had close ties with the LeT founder, Hafiz Saeed.

Singh's tragic fate was sealed when a group of Pakistani inmates attacked him with bricks and iron rods. He had been accused of involvement in multiple bombings in Punjab province during 1990 and subsequently received a death sentence.
