British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has strongly criticized Iran's recent assault on Israel, labeling it as reckless and affirming the UK's commitment to regional security. The attack, which involved numerous aerial drones and cruise missiles launched overnight, prompted the UK Ministry of Defence to deploy additional Royal Air Force fighter jets to assist in intercepting the drones.
The deployment of these aircraft and air-fuelling tankers forms part of Operation Shader, the UK's ongoing effort against the Islamic State (ISIS) in the region. Sunak emphasized the UK's condemnation of Iran's actions, highlighting the potential for heightened tensions and instability in the region. He reiterated the UK's support for Israel's security and that of its regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq.
Sunak also stressed the importance of collaborative efforts with allies to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence. Meanwhile, Israel reported successfully intercepting most of the attacks with the assistance of other countries, notably the US.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps described Iran's actions as senseless and detrimental to regional security, especially amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. He underscored the UK's commitment to working with Israel and regional partners to maintain peace and stability, urging Iran to cease destabilizing behavior.
The retaliatory attack by Iran follows an earlier strike on its consulate in Syria, which resulted in the death of seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officers, including a senior commander. While Iran has accused Israel of carrying out the attack, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
India has expressed serious concern over the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, emphasizing the need for immediate de-escalation, restraint, and a return to diplomacy. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the importance of maintaining security and stability in the region, closely monitoring developments and ensuring the safety of the Indian community through its embassies in the area.
