Andrei Chibis, the Governor of Russia's Murmansk region, finds himself in a precarious state after being assaulted following a meeting in Apatity on Thursday. At 45 years old, Chibis is currently in a grave condition and undergoing surgery in the intensive care unit, as confirmed by Yuri Shiryaev, the chief physician of Apatity-Kirov Hospital, in a statement to the Xinhua news agency on Friday.
The assailant, identified as Alexander Bydanov, was promptly apprehended by security personnel at the scene. According to reports from the governor's spokesperson, the attack was sudden and devoid of any explicit demands or slogans from the perpetrator. A swift response from a Russian National Guard officer led to Bydanov's swift capture.
An investigation is now in progress to unravel the underlying causes and motives behind this alarming incident.
