There was a horrific shooting Monday night at an upscale office skyscraper on Park Avenue in New York City, in which a gunman killed four people — one of whom was a Bangladeshi-American police officer — before taking his own life.
The shooter entered the 44-story skyscraper that is home to the international investment giant BlackRock, police said, armed with an M4 rifle.
He killed police officer Didarul Islam and a woman in the lobby and continued to the 33rd floor, where he entered an office of a real estate company and killed two other people — a man and a woman — at random. The shooter then turned the gun on himself.
Officer Islam, a Bangladeshi native, was hailed as a hero at a press conference. Mayor Eric Adams, fighting back tears, was effusive in his praise for his bravery. "He was saving lives," Adams said, choking back emotion. "He was protecting New Yorkers."
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch disclosed more on Islam's life, indicating he was 36 years of age, had two sons, and there was a third child expected. "He made the ultimate sacrifice, murdered in cold blood, in a uniform that represented the promise that he made to this city," she stated.
The shooter was 27-year-old Shane Tamura. The authorities stated he had a history of mental problems but did not have a known motive for attacking the real estate business. Why he targeted the building or its occupants is still under investigation.
The violent outburst recalled horrific memories of a similar catastrophe mere blocks away, which eight months ago left one dead. In that case, a young man assassinated a chief executive officer of a health insurance firm in retaliation for what he believed was corporate greed, and it was detailed in a manifesto.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m., and there was a swift lockdown of the building and its surrounding area. The officers evacuated residents and swept the buildings for any possible explosives. Officer Islam was rushed out of the building and given emergency CPR on the street before being taken to a hospital, where he died due to his injuries.
Later that night, the remaining people inside the building were led out with their hands up while heavily armed police secured the perimeter.
Commissioner Tisch added that Tamura had driven from Las Vegas to New York and had arrived just before the attack. Police subsequently searched his black BMW and seized prescription medication, a revolver, extra ammunition, and the case of the rifle.
BlackRock, the financial giant with headquarters in the building, manages $11.5 trillion in assets, which reflects the high-profile status of the location of the violence.
