Individuals will face criminal penalties if they carry concealed weapons in sensitive locations like airports and other public transit, educational institutions as well as Times Square, Xinhua news agency reported. The law also makes "no carry" the default for private property including bars, restaurants, shops or grocery stores, unless deemed permissible by property owners. The US Supreme Court recently struck down a century-old New York State law requiring gun owners to have probable cause in order to carry a concealed weapon.

Hochul won 67.1 per cent of votes, followed by 20.6 per cent for New York City public advocate Jumaane Williams and 12.3 percent for Congressman Thomas Suozzi from Long Island on Tuesday.

Indian-origin man shot dead execution-style in New York

After the shooting on Saturday afternoon, Satnam Singh, 31, was taken to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead, the New York Daily News reported quoting police. The incident happened in the South Ozone Park neighbourhood, which is next to Richmond Hill where two Sikh men had been assaulted in April in what police classified as hate crimes.

Supreme Court strikes down New York state gun laws as too restrictive

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down by a 6-3 majority vote a New York gun law enacted more than a century ago that places restrictions on carrying a concealed handgun outside the home -- an opinion marking the widest expansion of gun rights in a decade. "Because the State of New York issues public-carry licences only when an applicant demonstrates a special need for self-defence, we conclude that the State's licensing regime violates the Constitution," Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the court's 6-3 majority ruling.

3 members of Indian-origin family killed in New York fire

WPIX TV station reported that the house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived there on Friday afternoon and found two bodies in a basement flat. Firefighters found the third body the next day, it said. The New York Post, quoting neighbours and relatives, identified the couple as Nanda Balo Persaud and Bono Salima 'Sally' Persaud. The body of their son Devon Persaud, 22, was found only the next day.

New York lawmakers pass legislation package raising age bar for semi-automatic rifle

Thursday night's passage of the package, which includes 10 bills, comes after it was introduced by Governor Kathy Hochul and leaders of the state legislature on Tuesday. "This comprehensive package will close loopholes, give law enforcement the tools they need to prevent easy access to guns, and stop the sale of dangerous weapons to 18-year-olds," Hochul in a statement.
