Wrestlers mess: DCW demands FIR against cops probing allegations

The DCW has recommended Delhi Police to register an FIR against police officials under section 166A (c) (public servant disobeying direction under law) of the Indian Penal Code. In a statement on Wednesday, the DCW stated that it had received a complaint regarding sexual harassment of women wrestlers by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

"Their (complainants') family members are getting threats now. Their lives are in danger. Police must register the FIR and help the innocent people," Vinesh told IANS. "If something happens to these complainants, Delhi Police and the government will be responsible for it."

Aman Sehrawat defeated Kyrgyzstan's Almaz Smanbekov 9-4 in the 57kg freestyle final to bag a gold medal in his maiden appearance in the competition, Sehrawat opened his campaign with a 7-1 win over Japan's Rikuto Arai in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal bout, he got the better of China's Zou Wanhao by a 7-4 scoreline. Sehrawat is the current U-23 World Champion in his weight category and also a TOPS athlete.

"They (Bajrang, Vinesh) are really upset with the way things have been handled so far. Now they are saying that they will not train till the committee submits its report and Brij Bhushan is sacked," sources added. Earlier, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) has approved wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat's request for an International training camp.

Vikas defeated China's Jian Tan by 8-0 technical superiority in the men's 72kg Greco-Roman category, within a remarkable time of 1 min 41 secs on Monday. The Indian started his campaign strongly with an 11-0 technical superiority win over Korea's Ji-yeon Lee in the qualification round. However, he suffered a 6-1 loss to Iran's Sajjad Imentalab in the quarter-finals.

WFI's Oversight Committee clears 27 wrestlers for 2nd Ranking Series

Ashu, who is India's top hope in Greco-Roman wrestler, was on Sunday included by the Oversight Committee set up by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), in the squad to participate in the upcoming 2nd Ranking Series 'Ibrahim-Moustafa' tournament. The committee has cleared a 43-member Indian contingent, including 27 wrestlers, for the event, which would take place in Alexandria, Egypt from February 23-26.

Apart from enquiring into the allegations, the Oversight Committee is also looking after the day-to-day administration of the WFI. "Former wrestler Babita Phogat has been added to the panel of the Oversight Committee formed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to undertake the day-to-day administration of the Wrestling Federation of India," the Sports Ministry said in a statement.

Taking to Twitter, Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist said: "We were assured that we would be consulted before the Oversight Committee was formed. It is very sad that we were not even consulted before the formation of this committee." He also tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur.
