During his pre-departure press conference ahead of the tour of South Africa, Kohli on Wednesday said that he was never asked to stay on as T20 skipper when he informed the board about his decision to relinquish the post, contradicting Ganguly's statement which suggested that the star batter was asked to reconsider his decision. Asked about Kohli's comments, the BCCI chief refused to speak on the whole controversy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared pictures of team members Jasprit Bumrah, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur from the flight before leaving for Johannesburg. "All buckled up, South Africa bound," wrote the BCCI on Twitter. On the tour to South Africa, which was largely in doubt due to the Omicron variant of Covid-19 surging in the Rainbow nation, India will play three Tests and three ODIs as part of the revised schedule.

Sharma had been rested from Tests against New Zealand and was promoted as vice-captain ahead of trip to South Africa. But in a practice session in Mumbai, Sharma injured his left hamstring, thereby ruling him out of the series with Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal drafted as his replacement. Sharma had scored 906 runs in 21 innings at an average of 47.68 and was India's highest run-getter in Test cricket in 2021.
Virat Kohli to miss South Africa ODI series

While injured Rohit Sharma will miss the Tests in South Africa, the ODIs after that will see Kohli being unavailable for the Indian team. It is learnt that Kohli has already informed the BCCI about his decision. India and South Africa will play three ODIs after the Test series. As per a TOI report, "Kohli is going to miss the ODIs as he is taking time off to celebrate his daughter Vamika's first birthday.

On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India declared Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain. On this decision the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has opened up and said that the board and selectors took this decision together. In addition to this he also said that the board and he personally had words with Virat Kohli over the decision. The tenure of Rohit Sharma as ODI captain is likely to begin in the series against South Africa in January.

Jayant Yadav will come in place of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who picked up a niggle during the Kanpur Test, said the skipper leading the side. Virat resumed his captaincy after taking a break in the first Test. He also said that the wicket and the weather both looked nice and favorable for bating in the first innings.
