With India all-rounder Hardik Pandya to lead Gujarat's title defence in IPL 2023, Williamson admitted that not being a captain has taken some things off his plate, citing the huge amount of energy leadership roles require. Earlier, Williamson had stepped down as New Zealand's Test captain, with Tim Southee taking over.

The Hyderabad-based franchise announced Markram's appointment on Twitter by sharing a video with the caption: "THE. WAIT. IS. OVER. #OrangeArmy, say hello to our new captain Aiden Markram." Markram will take over from Kane Williamson, who was released at the end of last season and went on to join defending champions Gujarat Titans during the 2023 auction.

The 22-year-old achieved the feat on the fourth ball of the 20th over. Rasool said Umran deserves to be fast-tracked into the Indian team across all formats.
