EC issues notification for presidential polls, 11 file nominations

As per the notification, the nominations can be filed till June 29 and the scrutiny of the papers will be held on June 30. The last date for withdrawing from the electoral fray is July 2. The counting will take place on July 21. As per a source, 11 candidates filed the nomination for the country's top constitutional post after the notification was issued. However, one nomination was rejected due to incomplete documents, the source said.

The BJP is just short of 50 per cent of the Electoral College and is hopeful of getting support of Navin Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal and Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in next month's Presidential polls. Currently opposition parties collectively have 51.1 per cent share of Electoral College while the BJP and its alliance partners have 48.9 per cent.
OBCs get only 9-13% reservation in panchayat polls, claims Kamal Nath

The allegation was made by the state Congress chief Kamal Nath, who highlighted district-wise OBC seats allocated for three-tier panchayat polls in the state. "BJP says it will give 35 per cent quota to OBCs, but in reality it has given only 11.2 per cent seats of Zilla panchayat members to the OBC community, 9.5 per cent seats for Janpad panchayat president posts, 11.5 per cent for Janpad panchayat members and only 12.5 per cent seats for sarpanchs (head of village panchayats)," he said.

Bihar bypolls: Braving heat, voters turn up in large numbers

According to the Election Commission, 11.20 per cent voting was registered in first two hours of polling at 9 a.m. Polling began at 7 a.m. in 350 polling booths across the constituency. Despite high temperature, women were stepping out of their houses to exercise their franchise since morning. The BJP has fielded Agnimitra Paul for the Lok Sabha by-polls from Asansol in West Bengal against TMC candidate and former union minister Shatrughan Sinha. Paul is the MLA from Asansol South assembly constituency and general secretary of the West Bengal BJP. In a statement BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said, "The BJP Central Election Committee has approved the following names for biennial polls of Rajya Sabha."
