First conviction in Delhi riots case: Man given 5-year jail term

Before this, a man was acquitted by the court in July. This is the first jail term awarded to anyone in the Delhi riots case, said a police official. Additional Sessions Judge Virender Bhat awarded the jail term to the accused.

In the afternoon of February 26, 2020, the local police of Police Station Gokulpuri came to know about the dead body of a male person at the godown of Anil Sweets. The body was found in a charred condition and later identified as Dilbar Negi. He had come from Uttarakhand to the capital city six months prior to his death.

A bench of Justice C. Hari Shankar and Justice Rajiv Shakdher was hearing a batch of petitions challenging Section 375(2) of the IPC which exonerates a husband from the punishment of rape for forcible physical relations with his legally wedded wife without her consent. Advocate Nandita Rao, represented the Delhi government, said just because this is not a criminal offence under Sections 375, does that create a compulsion on a woman to have sex with her husband? "The answer is no."
No immediate plan for Uniform Civil Code, Centre tells Delhi HC

In its response to a petition filed by advocate Ashwini Upahadhay, the Central government said it has requested the Law Commission to undertake an examination of various issues relating to the Uniform Civil Code and to make recommendations thereof. The government submitted that the purpose behind the Constitution's Article 44, seeking a Uniform Civil Code for the citizens, is to strengthen the object of "The Secular Democratic Republic" as enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution.

While listing the matter for March 2, Justice Mukta Gupta also asked Moitra to submit a copy of her defamation case. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared on behalf of Moitra, argued that the channel reporter harassed her in the Parliament premises, repeatedly called her a thief, and shoved a mike in her face. The words "chor (thief)" uttered by his client was nothing but a reaction in the heat of the moment and it cannot be termed as defamatory, he argued.

Arguing that the scheme ensures actual ration delivery to the needy, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the Delhi government, submitted that both the scheme and the NFSA have the same basics.
