BWF World Championships: Axelsen wins men's singles title, Yamaguchi retains women's crown
With his win, Axelsen now simultaneously holds the Olympic, World Championships, BWF World Tour Finals, and the last three Super 1000 titles. He also claimed the world title in Glasgow in 2017. World number one was expected to prevail over Vitidsarn, and he did, but he was required to step up a level in the second game. The 21-year-old Vitidsarn, having been blown away in the opening game, exerted greater control in the second, mixing his shots and keeping Axelsen on edge.
Shuttlers Chirag-Satwiksairaj go down fighting to Malaysian pair; settle for bronze
The Indian badminton men's doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy was leading by five points going into the first break but the nimble Malaysian duo grew in confidence as the match progressed. The Malaysians' solid defence saw them level the game at 16-all. But Chirag and Satwiksairaj survived the opening game largely because of their compact net play.

The duo has become the first men's doubles player from India to secure a BWF World Championships medal and only the second doubles pair after the women's team of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa to secure a medal for the country in the prestigious tournament. The Indian pair, who entered the tournament on the back of clinching gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games recently, upset the Japanese pair, ranked No.2 in the tournament.

The fourth-seeded Chen, who surrendered an 11-7 lead in the second set, defeated Chochuwong, known in China by her Chinese name Li Meimiao, 21-17, 17-21, 21-10 in 75 minutes. Carolina Marin, the Rio Olympic champion and three-time world titlist, also survived a scare to advance to the last eight.
BWF World Championships: Prannoy pips Lakshya; Arjun-Kapila, Satwik-Chirag into quarters, Saina bows out
Prannoy came from a game down to beat the ninth-seeded Lakshya 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 in the round of 16. With this win, the veteran continued his fine run of form in the tournament having beaten former world champion Kento Momota in the previous round. The 30-year-old will next face China's Zhao Jun Peng in the last eight and will be assured of a first BWF World Championships medal if he wins.

"I didn't really expect it (the win). It's always been tough to play him in the past as it's the highest level of badminton. I knew I had to be very disciplined against him and it was really important to pace the game really well; to know which points to push and even which points I could lose," said Prannoy after his win over two-time world champion Momota.
BWF World Championships: China's Shi sails into last 16 at badminton worlds
Shi, who returned to action at the tournament after a 10-month suspension, took 46 minutes to down the Dane 21-13, and 21-16 in the second round. The 2018 worlds finalist has slipped to 25th in the world rankings after a long absence, but he proved much stronger than what the ranking place has suggested. He rated his performance "7 out of 10", one point more than his first-round show.

Another women shuttler who made a mark at the championships was Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, who overcame Rachel Choong of England 21-9, 24-22 for the women's SH6 gold. Joshi settled for two more silver with her partners Shanthiya V. and Ruthick Raghupathi respectively, in the women's doubles SL3-SU5 and mixed doubles SL 3 - SU 5 events.

She then got a walkover from sixth-seeded Nazomi Okuhara of Japan, who pulled out due to an injury, and stormed into the pre-quarterfinals in the women's singles. The 32-year-old Saina, who won a silver medal in the 2015 World Championships in Jakarta and a bronze in 2017 in Glasgow, on Tuesday, stormed past Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong, quelling her challenge 21-19, 21-9 in 38 minutes.
Two-time champion Momota reaches second round at badminton worlds
Momota took only 37 minutes to see off the 82nd-ranked Munoz 21-16, 21-14. The local favourite will next face India's H.S. Prannoy. Third seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark became the biggest name to crash out in the first round as he went down to Japan's Kenta Nishimoto 21-15, 21-19.
