CWG 2022: India's badminton contingent returns home, Sindhu, Shetty receive warm welcome

PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Chirag Shetty were on Wednesday welcomed by supporters and family members with bouquets at the Hyderabad airport early after they returned from Birmingham. India finished its Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign at fourth position with 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze).

In his debut outing in the multi-nation event, Lakshya came back incredibly well after losing the first set to become the fourth Indian shuttler to win a gold medal in men's singles category after Prakash Padukone (1978), Syed Modi (1982) and Parupalli Kashyap (2014). It also means that India have first and third podium finish in men's singles badminton after Kidambi Srikanth clinched the bronze medal after defeating Jia Heng Teh of Singapore 21-15, 21-18.

England's 4 x 400m women's quartet including Jessie Knight, Ama Pipi, Jodie Williams and Victoria Ohuruogu disqualified due to a lane infringement. Team England Athletics did not appeal the DQ decision, after reviewing the footage they said that there was an acceptance that an appeal would have had no grounds. After the disqualification, the Canadian team, including Natassha McDonald, Aiyanna Stiverne, Micha Powell and Kyra Constantine awarded gold medal while Jamaica take silver and team Scotland win the bronze medal.

India, who emerged as the most successful team in Gold Coast with six medals -- the same as England who had a silver medal less, are the defending champion in the Mixed Team competition having won the title four years back in Gold Coast ahead of Malaysia. They have in their ranks stars like former World No 1 and ex-World Champion PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, Kidambi Srikanth, silver medallist in the World Championship in December 2021.

Kashyap, the third seed, defeated Chinese Taipei's Chia Hao Lee 21-10 21-19 in a 36-minute encounter while Rajawat went down 21-19 21-13 to local star Chen Chi Ting in straight games. Manjunath won the first game 24-22 but lost the next two 21-5, 21-17 to go down in three games against Japan's Kodai Naraoka.

Kashyap, 40th in the badminton world rankings, beat world No 122 Chi Yu Jen 24-22, 21-10 in the first round of the BWF Super 300 badminton tournament. The 35-year old Kashyap was cruising in the first game with a 15-8 lead but had to thwart a late comeback by saving two game points. The second game, however, was a straightforward affair.

The Indian duo, 47th in the badminton world rankings, registered a formidable 21-15, 21-8 win over the world No. 95 Israeli pair of Misha Zilberman and Svetlana Zilberman. Both teams were quick to get off the blocks and were tied at 7-7 after early exchanges. However, the Indian pair upped their intensity to take a 1-0 lead.

Overall, the Indian team will return home with two gold, four silver and five bronze medals. Kaur, who has had a great season with gold and three silver before the Ireland event, defeated a fighting Oksana Kozyna from Ukraine in her final women's singles SL3 game with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-18 to take the gold.

World No 7 Sindhu took 58 minutes to defeat world No 11 Zhi Yi 21-9, 11-21, 21-15 and win her third title of the year. Two-time Olympic medallist earlier won the Syed Modi International in January and Swiss Open in March, however, were BWF Super 300-level meets. Sindhu, a former world champion and seeded third in the tournament, started the final at the Singapore Indoor Stadium with purpose.

World No 7 Sindhu came from behind to beat world No 19 Han Yue 17-21, 21-11, 21-19 in the quarterfinals, which lasted for one hour and 2 minutes. With the win, she set up a semifinal clash against Japan's Saena Kawakami, who upset Thai shuttler Pornpawee Chochuwong in her final eight clash. The Indian shuttler made a slow start and trailed her Chinese opponent 14-11 before scoring four back-to-back points to take the lead.
