OpenAI to Establish Its First Office in India, Confirms CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI, the group behind ChatGPT, on Friday confirmed that it will open its first office in India's capital, New Delhi, later this year, as well as release new data showing the fast adoption of its AI tools in the country.

The local presence will also facilitate OpenAI to serve better millions of Indian users, such as students, teachers, professionals, and developers who use it for learning, creative endeavors, and solving problems.

The move highlights India’s growing prominence in the global AI landscape, its vibrant AI ecosystem, and the increasing demand for OpenAI’s tools among individuals, businesses, and developers.

India is ChatGPT's second-largest user market in the world, following the United States, and one of its fastest-growing ones. India's weekly active users have more than quadrupled in the last year.

“OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation,” said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The minister further said, "As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are developing the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI's collaboration in promoting this vision to make the benefits of AI available to all citizens."

India is also among the top five developer markets globally on OpenAI's platform and has the largest number of ChatGPT students globally.

Although the specific location of the New Delhi office remains undisclosed, OpenAI has officially registered a local entity in India and commenced recruiting a specialized in-country team. This team will be dedicated to building partnerships with local governments, businesses, developers, and educational institutions.

Through this presence, OpenAI aims to closely engage with Indian users, customers, and partners, and develop features and tools specifically tailored to India, making advanced AI more affordable and accessible nationwide.

Indian businesses and institutions are already leveraging OpenAI’s technologies to address key challenges, including AI-powered agricultural services, streamlined recruitment processes, and enhanced governance solutions.
