In a moment of unimaginable pride and appreciation, Indian cricketing great Rohit Sharma was felicitated on Friday with the launch of the 'Rohit Sharma Stand' at Mumbai's renowned Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit, aged 37, is the fourth-highest run-getter for India across all forms, and this honor is a career-high moment in his incredible journey.
The official unveiling was an emotional ceremony, witnessed by Rohit, his wife Ritika Sajdeh, and his parents. Ritika was clearly overcome with emotion during the ceremony, echoing the emotional significance of the occasion.
The grand ceremony took place on Friday afternoon before the Mumbai Indians team and support staff. Wankhede — the stadium where Rohit developed his skills and established his career — was the appropriate venue for this celebration of his service to Indian cricket.
As the honour was conferred, Rohit and his family moved towards the middle of the field. His parents were privileged to press a ceremonial buzzer, which triggered a shower of confetti, formally opening the stand. At his side, Ritika was visibly overwhelmed with emotion, while Rohit's parents remained dignified throughout the ceremony.
This unique tribute came just after Rohit had stated his retirement from Test cricket, adding more to the importance of the event.
Known as one of the best white-ball cricketers in history, Rohit has set incredible records. In the One Day Internationals (ODIs), he has reached the 11,000-run mark and has 32 centuries. He is also the leading Indian run-scorer in T20 Internationals.
Rohit is the lone player in ODI cricket to achieve three double hundreds and also the record holder for the top score by an individual in the format.
Presently, Rohit is actively included in the Mumbai Indians team, getting ready for the resumption of IPL 2025 season. With MI in a close battle for the playoffs and standing third on the points list, Rohit's form and leadership are still crucial as the team looks to finish strong.
