US basketball star Brittney Griner jailed for nine years on drug charges
The 31-year-old Griner admitted possessing cannabis oil but told the court she made an "honest mistake". However, the court convicted her of smuggling and possessing narcotics, and gave her close to the maximum sentence recommended by prosecutors. Griner, who is a double Olympic gold medallist and is considered one of the best players in the world, was detained in February at an airport near Moscow when vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage. She had come to Russia to play club basketball during the US off-season, a BBC report said.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in jail and fined a million rubles (roughly $16,000) as punishment for allegedly flying into Moscow on February 17 with 0.702 grams of cannabis oil. CWG 2022: Mother of twins Dipika Pallikal shines on mixed day for India in squash
All eyes at the squash court were on the seasoned mixed doubles combine of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal after the latter bagged his first singles medal in the Commonwealth Games -- a bronze. Dipika is playing her first Commonwealth Games less than a year after giving birth to twin boys. The pair had won the mixed doubles title in the World Doubles in Glasgow where Dipika partnered Joshna Chinappa to the women's doubles title in April this year. On Thursday, Dipika and Saurav got the better of Emily Whitlock and Peter Creed of Wales, winning 2-0 (11-8, 11-4) in the rather one-sided encounter.
CWG 2022: Sreeshankar wins silver for India in men's long jump at Birmingham
This is India's second medal in athletics at Birmingham 2022 after Tejaswin Shankar won bronze in the high jump on Wednesday. This medal takes to 19 India's total medal count at this Commonwealth Games -- 5 gold, 7 silver and 7 silver. Sreeshankar came up with a superb jump on his fifth attempt as he kept to 8.08 metres to leapfrog from seventh to second.

Drag flicker Harmanpreet Singh struck a hat-trick -- two goals off penalty corners and one off a stroke, while Gurjant Singh added a field goal as India came up with a strong performance in the Pool B match against Wales, a team against which they had found it difficult to get past.
