Tokyo Olympics: Avinash Sable sets national record, misses final in 3000m steeplechase

Running the second heat, Sable, who hails from Beed district of Maharashtra, clocked 8 minutes, 18.12 seconds to finish seventh as the top three from the three heats and the next six fastest qualified for the final. Sable, who used to run six kilometres a day to get to school as a child, improved on his own record of 8:29.18 set in Bhubaneswar in 2018. The 26-year-old Armyman has had clocked 8:21.37 in the Asian Championships.

Deepika defeated Ksenia Perova of the Russian Olympic Committee 6-5 in a one-arrow shoot-off after both the archers had tied 5-5 on set points in their Round of 16 clash at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field. Deepika shot a 10 off her shoot-off arrow while Ksenia managed only seven.

Mary Kom, a 38-year-old mother from Manipur who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics, went down fighting to No.3 seed Ingrit Valencia of Colombia by a 3:2 split verdict. That brought to an end a glittering career that started at the turn of the century when Mary Kom, who took up boxing after being inspired by 1998 Bangkok Asian Games gold medalist Dingko Singh.

The 38-year-old Mary Kom, who had beaten the Colombian opponent in the quarter-finals of the World Championships 5:0 in 2019, lost the first round as Ingrit was quick to take advantage. The Colombian 32-year-old, who won bronze at the Rio Olympic Games, took 10 points each from four of the five judges unlike the Indian 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, who could earn 10 from only one judge.

The world number one registered a dominant straight-sets 6-2, 6-0 win over Japan's Kei Nishikori in just 72 minutes. Djokovic, whose best result in Olympics was a bronze medal in Beijing 2008, was not broken even once in the match. Nishikori, considered the local favourite, made 16 unforced errors. The 34-year-old Djokovic will be later seen in action in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles alongside Nina Stojanovic.

Initially, the Indian sailing team had finished ninth. But the Switzerland and Portugal teams, who finished sixth and seventh respectively, were handed an automati‘ 'U Fl'g' disqualification. The reason was that the two teams were over the start line the minute before the starting signal of the race was sounded. Team Ireland moved to sixth place while the Indian pair was upgraded to the seventh position.
