Commencing from 302/5 at dinner break, Smith and Carey continued to hold fort. Carey, the hometown boy, was watchful at the start but looked for scoring opportunities whenever it came while Smith was on cruise mode. The 91-run stand between Smith and Carey was broken by James Anderson, whose low nip-backer rapped Smith plumb in front of the pads. Smith's dismissal on 93 meant that he missed out on his 28th Test century,16th as skipper and 12th in the Ashes.
BWF World Championships: Sindhu, Srikanth advance to quarters

Defending champion Sindhu beat Thailand's ninth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-14, 21-18 in the pre-quarterfinal match that lasted 48 minutes, to stay on course for a second successive world badminton title. This was the fifth win for world No 7 Sindhu over the 10th-ranked Chochuwong from eight meetings. The Thai had beaten Sindhu in the previous two meetings, including the one at the BWF World Tour Finals earlier this month.
PAK vs WI: Rizwan becomes 1st batter to score 2,000 T20 runs in a calendar year

The wicketkeeper-batter smashed a quick-fire half-century (86 off 45) to achieve the feat. He had earlier surpassed West Indies Chris Gayle in the list of most T20 runs in a calendar year. Rizwan along with Babar Azam (79 off 53) put on a 158-run opening stand that set up Pakistan's win with seven deliveries and as many wickets to spare as they recorded their highest successful chase in T20Is.

World No. 4 Pliskova withdraws from Australian Open

Premier League: Leicester vs Tottenham game postponed due to COVID-19

The Premier League said it took the decision because of "an increase in positive Covid-19 cases within Leicester's squad" on Thursday. "In light of the new information, Leicester applied [on Thursday] for the fixture to be called off due to an ongoing outbreak within the squad, which has resulted in more players and staff testing positive for Covid-19 today," the Premier League said in a statement.
Ganguly reacts to Kohli's comments on T20 captaincy, says 'BCCI will deal with it appropriately'

During his pre-departure press conference ahead of the tour of South Africa, Kohli on Wednesday said that he was never asked to stay on as T20 skipper when he informed the board about his decision to relinquish the post, contradicting Ganguly's statement which suggested that the star batter was asked to reconsider his decision. Asked about Kohli's comments, the BCCI chief refused to speak on the whole controversy.
