IPL 2025: Suryakumar to Captain MI in Opening Match Against CSK, Confirms Hardik Pandya

India T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav will captain Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 season-opening match against Chennai Super Kings on March 23, confirmed MI regular skipper Hardik Pandya.

Pandya will be sitting out due to a one-match ban imposed on him for slow over-rate during MI's IPL 2024 final league match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), which is his third misdemeanor of the season.

Suryakumar had earlier led MI in one game in 2023. Pandya discussed the support he gets from his leaders, stating, "Suryakumar Yadav also leads India. He will captain Mumbai Indians in the opening match of IPL 2025. I am fortunate to have three captains with me – Rohit, Surya, and Bumrah. They are always present with me, giving me support whenever required."

Head coach Mahela Jayawardene also shared his thoughts on the MI-CSK rivalry, saying, “It’s a challenge for both teams. I’ve always enjoyed this battle and am looking forward to it. The team feels the adrenaline too.”

But Mumbai Indians will also be missing their ace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from a back injury he picked up during the Sydney Test in March. Jayawardene confirmed that Bumrah is being rehabilitated at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. "He's still at the NCA, recovering, and in good spirits. We hope he'll join the team soon."

After finishing at the bottom of the points table last year, Pandya emphasized MI’s goal to focus on the basics for IPL 2025. “Just play good cricket, stick together, do the processes right, and execute. With this talented group, we’re excited to enjoy the games,” Pandya added.

Pandya and Jayawardene also highlighted the importance of bolstering the team’s bowling attack, with the additions of Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult. "Having Trent Boult was important for us, and Deepak Chahar as well. We required seasoned bowlers who can manage pressure," Pandya said. Jayawardene concurred, saying, "Last season had its issues, but with the new auction and a new set of players, we want to begin strong with our core team and coming back players like Trent Boult."
