Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that Captain Temba Bavuma will miss the second Test against India due to a left hamstring strain. Following the conclusion of the first Test on Thursday, CSA announced that Dean Elgar will captain the side in what will be the final match of his international career, as he had previously announced his decision to retire before the series.
To fill the void left by Bavuma, Zubayr Hamza has been included in the squad as his replacement. Bavuma sustained the hamstring injury while fielding on the first day of the first Test at SuperSport Park, and subsequent scans revealed the extent of the strain, preventing him from participating in South Africa's first innings.
Bavuma's availability for the upcoming SA20 will be determined after further medical assessments. In his absence during the first Test, Elgar took charge and led the team to victory by an innings and 32 runs at Centurion after India's innings.
Elgar is no stranger to captaincy, having previously led the Proteas, including during India's last Test series visit to South Africa in 2022-23. Despite going 1-0 down in the series, Elgar, as the opener and captain, rallied the team to a comeback 2-1 victory.
