Scientists discover water in a distant galaxy pair
IANS -
Scientists detected water along with carbon monoxide in SPT0311-58 -- made up of two galaxies -- located nearly 12.88 billion light years from Earth. Water, in particular, is the third most abundant molecule in the universe after molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide.SPT0311-58 was first seen by ALMA scientists in 2017 at its location, or time, at a time when the universe was just 780 million years old.
NASA partners with National Geographic for Moon missions
Newsmen Science Desk -
National Geographic was selected following a competitive selection process. The US space agency and National Geographic has entered into a non-reimbursable (no-exchange-of-funds) Space Act Agreement to collaborate on compact, lightweight audiovisual hardware to fly inside Orion and related support for the project, NASA said in a statement.
India's first manned ocean mission 'Samudrayan' launched

With the launch of this unique ocean mission, India joins the elite club of nations such as the US, Russia, Japan, France, and China to have such underwater vehicles for carrying out subsea activities, a release from the Earth Sciences Ministry said.
Sun fires significant solar flare, can disrupt Earth's GPS signals: NASA
IANS -
"POW! The sun just served up a powerful flare," the US space agency said in a tweet. The X1-class flare caused a temporary, yet strong radio blackout across the sunlit side of Earth centred on South America, according to the US Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), which tracks space weather events.
Microbes to help develop Martian rocket bio-fuel on Red Planet
IANS -
While the bioproduction process would use three resources native to the Red Planet -- carbon dioxide, sunlight, and frozen water -- two microbes will be transported from Earth to Mars. The first is cyanobacteria (algae), which would take CO2 from the Martian atmosphere and use sunlight to create sugars, and second an engineered E. coli which will convert those sugars into a Mars-specific propellant for rockets and other propulsion devices, said a team led by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
IIT-G team develops material to make carbon-free hydrogen economy

While the commonly known 'solar cells' convert light directly into electrical energy, there is another type of sunlight-powered energy conversion system called 'PhotoElectroChemical' (PEC) cells that have elicited attention in recent times due to their direct production of fuels in combination of electrical energy.
NASA's Perseverance rover captures sounds on Mars
Newsmen Science Desk -
These sounds allow scientists and engineers to experience the Red Planet in new ways, NASA said. "It's like you're really standing there," said Baptiste Chide, a planetary scientist who studies data from the microphones at L'Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planetologie in France, in a statement.

Data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, along with the National Science Foundation's Very Large Array and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, captured views of the stellar remnant in X-ray, infrared and radio wavelengths, Space.com reported.
NASA's new Lucy asteroid spacecraft faces solar panel glitch
IANS -
Lucy successfully lifted off on October 16)from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida in the US. But on Sunday, NASA announced that one of Lucy's 24-foot-wide solar panels may not be working well. While the 12-year asteroid mission is safe and healthy, one of the two solar array is not be fully latched, NASA said in a statement
Venus never had oceans, couldn't support life: Study
Newsmen Science Desk -
Using sophisticated three-dimensional models of the atmosphere, similar to those scientists use to simulate the Earth's current climate and future evolution, the team studied how the atmospheres of the two planets would evolve over time and whether oceans could form in the process.
