The proposal for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, advocating uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws applicable to all citizens regardless of their religion, has been introduced in the Uttarakhand state assembly. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, presenting the bill, made a symbolic entrance carrying an original copy of the Constitution into the assembly.
This bill will undergo deliberation and discussion in the assembly before potential passage. The current assembly session was specially convened to address the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill.
Once enacted, Uttarakhand will become the first state in post-Independence India to implement the UCC, with Goa having already adopted it during Portuguese rule.
Several BJP-governed states, such as Gujarat and Assam, have shown interest in emulating the Uttarakhand model of the UCC.
