Choudhry had on the day of filing her nomination papers spoken of having served the Congress for 45 years and that she would now fight for BJP policies "till my last breath."

Her election was unanimous as the Congress had declared it would not field any candidate. The last date for withdrawal of nominations was Tuesday.

The bye-election has been necessitated as Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak in June this year. The term of this Rajya Sabha seat would end on April 9, 2026.

Choudhry, who joined the party two months ago after quitting the Congress, thanked the party leadership for entrusting her with the responsibility and spoke about her family's old relation with the BJP. She said, "My father-in-law, former Chief Minister Bansi Lal, had allied with the BJP to form the state government.

The daughter-in-law of Bansi Lal-often regarded as the architect of modern Haryana-Choudhry had grown disenchanted with Congress after it denied a ticket to her daughter Shruti for the last Lok Sabha elections in Bhiwani-Mahendragarh.

Choudhry, widow of the late Surender Singh, had in the past referred to former Chief Minister and Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar as her "bade bhai". She thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Saini, and Khattar for giving her an opportunity to serve the BJP, adding that their policies had been influential in her decision to join the party.

In 2019, Choudhry was elected as an MLA from Tosham in Bhiwani on a Congress ticket. She quit the Congress while accusing the state unit of being run like a "personal fiefdom," which was seen as an indirect attack on former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda.
