RG Kar Tragedy: Trinamool MP Seeks Calcutta HC's Intervention to Prevent Police Action

After his post gained traction and went viral early Sunday, Ray was summoned by the Kolkata Police to appear at the police headquarters that same evening. Choosing to ignore the initial summons, he was subsequently served with a second notice for his appearance.

Despite receiving a notice from Kolkata Police to answer questions following his social media post calling for the custodial interrogation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and the former controversial Principal of R.G Kar Medical College & Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor, veteran Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has called for intensified protests on the matter.

After his post gained traction and went viral early Sunday, Ray was summoned by the Kolkata Police to appear at the police headquarters that same evening. Choosing to ignore the initial summons, he was subsequently served with a second notice for his appearance.

In response, Ray made two significant posts on his social media, signaling his continued dissent despite disapproval from his party leadership. His first post included a song by Rabindranath Tagore with the lines: "Ami bhoy korbo na bhoy korbo na, du bela morar age morbo na bhai morbno na," meaning "I will not be scared and I will not die before death."

A few hours later, Ray's second post urged for protests against the police's actions towards supporters of Kolkata's traditional soccer rivals, East Bengal FC and Mohun Bagan. These supporters had gathered at the city’s largest football stadium to protest the tragic incident involving the doctor.

"I urge all football and sports enthusiasts to unite in a peaceful and democratic protest against the unjust arrests of Mohunbagan and East Bengal supporters. Jai Mohunbagan! Jai East Bengal!" Ray declared in his post.

Ray's defiance was also evident when he joined the 'Midnight Protest March by Women in Kolkata' on August 14, expressing solidarity due to having a “daughter” and “little granddaughter,” similar to many Bengali families, which motivated his participation in the protest.
