Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made explosive allegations in the Assembly on Thursday, linking Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi to a case involving alleged connections with Pakistan.
Sarma asserted that once the Assam Police's full investigation is made public, it will have a “devastating” impact on the Congress party, calling the revelations “huge.”
He stated, “Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, against whom the state government has filed an FIR for making statements that could disrupt internal harmony, visited India at least 18 times between 2010 and 2018. This has been uncovered in the Assam Police’s preliminary investigation.”
Providing further details, the Chief Minister said, “Within just three days of probing, the SIT discovered that Sheikh had traveled to India multiple times. A deeper investigation will reveal who facilitated his entry and whom he met. These findings will come to light in the coming days.”
Sarma warned that the initial information he had received would be “disastrous” for Congress, predicting that the party would struggle to handle the fallout.
Taking a dig at Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, he remarked, “Yesterday, I advised Pradyut Bordoloi not to attack me politically. This issue is set to become massive.”
He also emphasized the gravity of the situation, saying, “Standing here in the Assembly as a responsible leader, I assure you that the repercussions of this case will be monumental in Assam’s political landscape.”
Sarma then addressed Congress leader Debabrata Saikia’s doubts about Assam Police’s jurisdiction in the matter, responding, “Assam Police will investigate thoroughly, and if needed, we will transfer the case to the NIA for further action.”
Referring to the recent findings of the Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee report on the cash-for-jobs scam, which linked tainted official Rakesh Paul to former CM Tarun Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi, Sarma claimed, “That committee report was just 10 percent of the truth. This Pakistan link case is 1000 percent bigger, and it’s going to be a major revelation.”
Targeting Gaurav Gogoi, Sarma remarked, “Some people tried to portray me as a villain while presenting themselves as heroes. But now, the truth about their real character will gradually come to light.”
The Chief Minister further assured, “I pledge before the Assam Assembly that we will present a comprehensive report on the investigation by August. Give us three months, and the revelations will be enormous. I already have informal knowledge of the facts, but everything must be documented properly. Once we table this information in the Assembly, it will shake the political system.”
