Calcutta HC Approves BJP and Congress Protest Programs in RG Kar Tragedy Case

A single-judge bench of Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj granted permission to the BJP to conduct the sit-in demonstration at Esplanade in Kolkata, extending from August 29 to September 5. The BJP had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking permission after police purportedly refused it. Justice Bhardwaj, however said that not more than 1000 people can participate in the sit-in demonstration.

"We plan to introduce a Bill in the state Assembly within 10 days to seek capital punishment for those who commit rape and murder. We'll send it to the Governor, and if he doesn't approve it, we'll start an open-ended protest outside the Raj Bhavan. This Bill must become law... He can't dodge responsibility this time. Why shouldn't we hang rapists?" Banerjee asked while speaking at an event celebrating the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), her party's student organization.
