Opposition upset as first-time non-Congress leader became PM for third term: Narendra Modi

Briefing the media, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju quoted Modi as saying that MPs must understand legislative matters and attend both Houses regularly with a view to raising the concerns of their constituencies effectively. Though Rijiju did not directly link Modi's comments with Gandhi's controversial Lok Sabha speech, his assertion that the PM's message was universal has given clear political overtones to it.

Coming under criticism over Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi's speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently called upon NDA MPs to maintain parliamentary decorum and learn from seniors in the House. Sources say the discomfort of the opposition, with Modi becoming the first non-Congress PM to get an unprecedented third term in a row, prompted his remarks.

Fiery criticism by Gandhi about communal polarisation by the BJP had evoked a sharp response, as it was parliament where Modi condemned the remarks of the Congress leader against the Hindu community. Modi got accolades from alliance leaders for his historic tenure at the NDA meet, according to Rijiju.

Sources said Modi asked the MPs to study any issue in great detail before speaking to the media and to remain in close contact with their constituencies in order to thank voters for their elected posts. Modi also asked the MPs to visit the newly inaugurated Prime Ministers Museum, saying it was much better than what used to happen during earlier regimes.
