The Lok Sabha was suspended for the day at 2 PM on Wednesday amid repeated disruptions by opposition MPs in opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
It was the third straight day of disruptions on the floor of the House during the Monsoon Session, as proceedings were time and again suspended due to noisy protests.
Earlier during the day, Question Hour was adjourned till 2 PM following opposition members rushing into the Well of the House brandishing placards and raising slogans.
When the House resumed after lunch, the same scenes were witnessed. As the disruptions continued, TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was chairing the session, demanded another adjournment, bringing the day's proceedings to a close.
Chanting slogans like "SIR wapas lo" (Roll back SIR), the opposition made a formal demand for a debate on the Election Commission's current SIR exercise in Bihar—a political gesture in the run-up to the elections in the state later this year.
Speaker Om Birla, reacting to the unruly scenes, lambasted the behavior of protesting MPs. "You should conduct yourselves in a way that reflects the hopes and aspirations of the people who have elected you," he admonished, adding, "But you have been demonstrating street-like behaviour in Parliament."
He threatened to take severe action if the unruly behavior persisted. "MPs are not meant to carry placards. If you go on with such activities, I will be compelled to take firm action," Birla warned, calling the members back to their seats.
This is not the first instance this week that Parliament has been disrupted. The first days of the Monsoon Session were also disrupted by opposition protests for holding debates on Operation Sindoor and the SIR process in Bihar.
